Conservation Volunteers Needed!

The Schrems Chapter is kicking off its most aggressive year in conservation in recent history with six major projects and support for several other conservation efforts.  The projects cover three watersheds and we need volunteers on all of them!  I hope you will join us on one or more of these projects as we work to conserve, protect, and restore our local coldwater fisheries.

  • Pigeon River Project Volunteers Needed May 16, 2009. SWMTU returns to the Pigeon River in Ottawa County to continue its work on the Pigeon River in Hemlock Crossings Park on Saturday, May 16, 2009.  We will continue our cleanup of the river through the park and develop some new structures to improve the habitat, working our way downstream from last year’s projects.  Please contact JR Hartman at (home) 616-453-8344,  [email protected], to sign up for this project or to request further information.
  • SWMTU Rogue River Day June 6th. Do you want to help out on the Rogue River?  Join us on June 6th as we tackle two projects in the Rogue River watershed on the same day!   We have our first chapter sponsored Rogue River Cleanup taking place on Saturday morning.  Please contact Jay Cook [email protected] 616-745-5951 for further information or to sign up for the cleanup.  Also on the same day, we have an erosion control / habitat improvement project on Stegman Creek.  Please contact Dave Smith at [email protected] or 616-748-0101 for further information.
  • Tyler Creek Project July 11th. We return to Tyler Creek on July 11th.  The focus on our project will be to improve the habitat along the Trout Unlimited property along the Dolan Nature Area.  If you are interested in helping out or you would like further information, please contact Jim Flamming at [email protected] or at 616-365-3106.
  • Pigeon River Part II on August 8th. The chapter wraps up its work in Hemlock Crossings Park for 2009 on August 8th as we continue our river cleanup and habitat improvement project that was started in 2008.  Did you hear that a 20″ brown was shocked out of one of the structures that we installed last year?  Shhh, we don’t want anyone else to know they are there!  If you want in on the secret and you would like to help out with the project, contact Don Messinger at 616-846-7600 or at [email protected].
  • Tyler Creek Wetlands Project – August 15th. SWMTU is working to reduce some of the sand and agricultural runoff entering Tyler Creek by creating and enhancing a couple of wetlands along the stream.  The wetlands should trap and filter some of this runoff and as a result help to create a healthier stream.  If you want to help out, please contact Jim Flamming at 616-365-3106 or by email at [email protected].
